Use hashtags to build a following in 2 easy steps

Would you like to create a following to your twitter feed that goes beyond your local business associates? Here are 2 simple steps you can take as you aim to establish you or your business as the thought leader in your chosen field.

1. Research relevant tags

Spend some time looking at the twitter profiles of those who are tweeting items relevant to your sector and take a note of the hashtags they are using.

For example I often tweet about WordPress plugins or development, so looking at relevant tweets I can see that #WordPress is a relevant hashtag. Looking then at the results, I can see a plethora of tweets on my subject, and I can list other relevant hashtags that appear to be used a lot and are generating responses. In my case: #wp, #wphack, #wpnews and so on.

2. Use them

Now that you have made a list of the relevant hashtags to your chosen discipline, get using them. Either build them into the content of your tweet, or apply them to the end of your tweet.

Examples:

A new update for #WordPress has been released. Don’t forget to upgrade!

or

Be sure to update your software! New update release. #WordPress #wp #wphack

As if by magic, your tweets are now exposed to thousands of people who follow those particular subjects, and before long you should find them following you!
